Interfaith Iftar

WHEREAS, Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is expected to
commence on March 23, 2023 and end on April 21, 2023; and
WHEREAS, Ramadan encompasses a month of spiritual reflection, charity, community, and
most importantly, fasting. Muslims fast from dawn until sunset by abstaining from both food and
water; and
WHEREAS, iftar is the meal at sunset in which Muslims break their fast. This Ramadan, sunset
occurs approximately between 7:00 and 7:40. This is when many Muslim students are still on
campus due to classes, exams, and other school-related activities; and
WHEREAS, USG is committed to promoting positive multicultural and social growth while
consolidating relationships with all organizations on campus. USG seeks to hold community
events to engage with and benefit the diverse groups within the student body; and
WHEREAS, USG intends to host up to 300 attendees for a community event to honor Ramadan
and celebrate diversity while promoting the religious communities on campus. This event will
also serve as a bridge between different religious groups at UIC; then
LET IT BE RESOLVED, the Undergraduate Student Government will partner with the Muslim
Chaplaincy at UIC to host a community iftar and invite different interfaith and student
organizations; and
LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED, this event will take place on Wednesday, April 6th from 6 pm
to 9 pm in the Illinois Room; and
LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED, the Undergraduate Student Government will allocate a
maximum of $5,600 to cover the costs of the room reservation, catering and related fees; then

LET IT BE RESOLVED, that any unspent funds shall be returned to the USG budget.
